With eyes firmly set on the future, Toyota Motors Corporation's new CEO, Koji Sato, recently unveiled plans to launch ten new electric vehicle (EV) models by 2026. This strategic move, shared during his debut press conference, aims to support the automaker's commitment to halving emissions by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Toyota, globally recognized as a leading mobility company, is embracing an electrification-centric vision while simultaneously enhancing hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Sato emphasized the need to "start by electrifying," presenting Toyota's multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, which goes beyond purely electric vehicles.
As part of its comprehensive strategy, Toyota is bolstering its bZ series of EVs in developed markets and aims to release a locally-produced battery SUV in North America by 2025. The automaker is also committed to expanding battery plant production.
China, another key market, will see two locally developed electric models by 2024. Throughout Asia, Toyota intends to concentrate its efforts on developing electric compact cars and battery-powered pick-up trucks
This exciting development plan comes with significant challenges, such as the creation of a dedicated EV production platform amidst lingering pandemic measures, supply chain disruptions, and semiconductor shortages. However, Toyota remains steadfast in its commitment to usher in an era of electrification and intelligent vehicles.
Decarbonising Toyota, the world's largest car manufacturer, is a crucial step in Japan’s mission to slash emissions and combat climate change. Amid this green shift, Toyota emphasizes the importance of ensuring no one is left behind.
Toyota's strategic plan, once fully announced, is likely to position it in direct competition with major players in the global EV market, including Tesla Inc. and China’s BYD Co.
Despite only a small percentage of Toyota's annual sales currently being battery EVs, the company's leadership remains committed to its multi-pathway strategy. The unveiling of the inaugural EV, the bZ4X, marked a significant milestone, signalling Toyota's unwavering dedication to a cleaner, greener future.
